September and October Fall senior sessions in Pittsburgh might just be my favorite, and here’s why: While summer gets a lot of love (hello, wildflower fields), there’s something truly magical about early to mid-fall. We live in Western Pennsylvania, and in my opinion, there’s no place better for fall color. The trees explode into rich reds, golds, and oranges—and that vibrant backdrop creates absolutely stunning senior portraits.

Western Pennsylvania is known for its stunning fall foliage, and senior photos taken during this time can have such a rich, timeless feel. Whether it’s golden leaves blanketing the ground or vibrant reds and oranges peeking through the trees, this natural backdrop adds an extra layer of magic to your portraits. Local parks, tree-lined paths, and even school campuses transform into jaw-dropping photo spots this time of year. It’s one of the reasons September and October are two of my favorite months to shoot—every location looks completely different than it does in summer. And let’s be honest: there’s just something nostalgic about fall that fits so perfectly with senior year.

Even though traditional wildflower fields are usually done blooming by the end of summer, that doesn’t mean we’re out of options. You can still find beautiful flowers in September and even early October in Western PA. Many landscaped areas and local gardens have late-season blooms like dahlias, zinnias, black-eyed Susans, and even some roses. So if you had your heart set on flowers in your photos, don’t rule out fall—there’s still plenty of color to be found! I’ll be sharing some images below that prove just how lovely September florals can be.

Let’s talk fashion—because fall styling is where it’s at. With the weather cooling down (but not freezing), you have way more flexibility when it comes to outfits. You can still totally rock a sundress or a sleeveless top in early fall without shivering, but you also have the option to lean into cozier pieces like oversized sweaters, denim jackets, tall boots, and layers. It’s the best of both worlds.
I always tell my seniors to think about variety when styling—fall gives you the chance to mix light, flowy pieces with more textured, autumn-inspired layers. And that variety can really make your gallery pop. Bonus: no sweating off your makeup like in July.

Summer might get all the attention for senior photos, but fall is truly underrated. The light is softer and more golden, especially in the evenings, which makes for the dreamiest natural lighting. Plus, many popular photo locations are less crowded once school starts again—so we’re not fighting for space like we do in peak summer. And with milder temps, you don’t have to worry about heat or humidity messing with your hair, makeup, or outfit choices.
Fall sessions tend to feel more relaxed and comfortable, and the colors, textures, and mood they create can feel so warm and cozy in your final photos.

One of the best things about September and October senior sessions in Pittsburgh is that they’re incredibly versatile. Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean your photos have to scream pumpkins and crunchy leaves (unless you want them to!).
There are plenty of locations that still feel light, bright, and summery well into September—and even early October. Pair that with a breezy dress, a straw hat, or sandals, and boom: you’ve got summer vibes in the middle of fall.
Even better? You can style your session with a mix of looks. Start with a more summery outfit in a clean, green space and then layer on something cozy and autumn-inspired for the second half. With the right location and styling, your gallery can feel like two completely different sessions—all in one shoot.
I’ll include a few images below that show how different a September or October session can look, depending on the styling and setting.

As you’ve seen throughout this post, September and October senior sessions offer so much variety—from golden foliage to blooming flowers, cozy layers to light summery styles. The images sprinkled above are all real sessions I’ve shot during these months right here in the Pittsburgh area, and they show just how unique fall can be for senior portraits. Whether you’re after autumn vibes or something a little more unexpected, there’s room for it all.

One of the questions I get asked most often is, “What should I wear for my senior session?”. If you’re stuck between summer and fall vibes—or just want something a little extra special—consider using a clothing rental service like Nuuly (← that’s my referral link for $30 off!). It’s perfect for trying out trendy, high-quality pieces without committing to buying. I’ve had seniors find everything from cozy fall layers to flowy dresses that still work beautifully in September’s warmer temps. And of course, I’m always happy to help you pull looks together that feel like you and complement the session vibe.
